What it's really like to be an art-pop band in 2025

The latest edition of our podcast features a conversation with a member of one of our favourite art-pop bands.

They are right in the thick of it, releasing a new album and starting a new label, 15 years into their career. It's a conversation that will hopefully inspire you to get off your phone and run away from technology for a while.

This week's guests have just released this brilliant fluorescent-banger comeback single that is guaranteed to bring some 'serious joy' to your day:

Whilst everything is fresh and febrile, I sat down with Bex, one third of Liverpool's self-manufactured Pop band Stealing Sheep to find out more about their G-IRL (Girl In Real Life) record label (give them a follow on Bandcamp), their forthcoming album, the lingering magic of MySpace, the power of community, their music scene's do-it-together collective energy, the problem with toxic productivity, why you should get off your phone, how art collectives like Gorilla Girls have inspired their "irl" approach, and some of the challenges of being a human in a time of AI-superpowered machines.

It's a really insightful chat about what it's really like to make and release music 2025 and if you're not already a fan, it's a great chance to understand why people (including me, loads of former DiS writers and tonnes of my former colleagues at BBC Radio 6 Music) are so obsessed with Stealing Sheep.
